Why do people say Darwin recanted his beliefs?

People who don't believe in evolution would like to think that Darwin was so stupid that he recanted his own beliefs, just so they can feel smug about their own self-righteousness. It doesn't matter what he did or did not do anyway - evolution is a fact of life.
