What does the manufacturers maximum RAM capacity actually mean..?

It means that the highest amount of RAM that computer can take is 4GB worth. Don't try adding 8GB; that's double what that computer can take. You would waste your money if you bought 8GB RAM chips, and it didn't work. It could even screw up your PC. Just don't do it.
