Do I need cable or Direct TV to use a DVR or TiVo?

I have only an outdoor antenna, no cable or dish. I will be getting a new HDTV. I would like to be able to set a DVR to record programs while I am away for an evening or a few days. I have been using my VCR, but don't think I will be able to record that way after Feb.
