How can I record NON HD - basic cable on some kind of digital recording system without paying monthly fees?

I only have basic cable coming in my house without HD and I don't plan to upgrade. I want to record TV shows without using VCR tapes, or DVDs. I would like some kind of hard drive situation....Can anyone please help me out? Thanks in advance!!
